Western & Southern Open Finals Set

Angelique Kerber moved one way away from the number one spot in the WTA rankings with a solid 6-3, 6-4 win over third seed Simona Halep.

Simona Halep broke Kerber’s serve early for a 3-2 lead before a rain delay forced players off court.

When play resumed Kerber was in full control, not dropping another game in the first set and breaking Halep twice to open the second set.

”I’ve had a lot of ups and downs the last few years and a lot of experiences from which I’ve learned,” Kerber said. ”I think I’m one of the best tennis players.”

Kerber will play fifteen seed Karolina Pliskova, who dominated four seed Garbine Muguruza 6-1, 6-3 in just under an hour.

Muguruza struggled with her serve through out the match in the windy and humid conditions, never looking comfortable and able to get her teeth in the match.

“I always believe…there is I would say 99% of the players I can beat them if I play good tennis,” said confident Karolina Pliskova after her win.

Andy Murray continues his impressive summer with his twenty-second consecutive win, reaching the Western & Southern Open finals after a 6-3 6-3 win over four seed Milos Raonic.

Murray looks to add to his titles this summer at Queens, Wimbledon, and a Rio Olympics gold medal in singles play in Sunday’s final.

Murray’s opponent in Sunday’s final will be twelve seed Marin Cilic who defeated Grigor Dimitrov 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a match that ended just after 1:30am.

The match began just after 9:00pm and players were able to get in just one game before yet another rain delay forced players off court for just under two hours.

Both players traded blows all evening but the defining moment may be with Dimitrov serving in the third set at 5-5, 30-40. Cilic hit a forehand that just clipped the back of the line when a fan yelled out, prompting Dimitrov to hit a forehand error and give the break of serve to Cilic.

Cilic would serve out the set and match in the next game with relative ease and will have to take the court again for the single’s final just 15 hours after having completed his semifinal match.
