Machine open 2015 season opener with loss
The Ohio Machine opened their 2015 campaign the same way they ended last year’s season: with a loss to the New York Lizards.
The 14-8 loss gives New York an undefeated record against Ohio 7-0.
Despite leading 3-1 early in the game and being tied 6-6 at the half, the Machine saw their first half efforts unravel as New York solidified their win with a second half onslaught, outscoring Ohio 8-2.
The Machine jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first half after midfielder Jake Bernhardt scored their first goal of the season on an assist from midfielder Peter Baum, who also threw down a three-goal hat trick in the first half.
New York took the lead in the second quarter 5-4, but found themselves down late in the half 6-5 after Ohio’s Baum and midfielder Tom Schreiber notched goals.
With the third quarter tied at 8-8, the Lizards managed to lock down last year’s league-leading scoring offense by shutting Ohio down and going on a 6-0 run.
Baum led the team with five points and three goals, with Schreiber following up with four points and two goals.
The Machine’s Marcus Holman, a third-year attackman and last year’s MLL league leader in goals scored, got his first one of the year in the third quarter along with Stanwick Steele who also scored in the third.
Both Holman and Steele finished with two points apiece on one goal and one assist each.
The Machine will return home Sunday, April 19 in a 1 p.m. matchup against the defending MLL champs the Denver Outlaws, who lost their season opener 16-13 to the Boston Cannons.
