Field announced for Western & Southern Open in Cincy
On Monday, organizers for the Western & Southern Open announced the player field for both the men’s and women’s field with the 2013 tournament looking to be another great one with all the top players committing to make their way to Cincinnati.
The entirety of the ATP Top 40 will be making their way to Cincinnati, with Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer being the top big names committed. Top Americans Sam Querrey and John Isner also highlight the men’s draw. Both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have never won in Cincinnati. A win would give Djokovic, four-time runner up, a career sweep of the Masters 1000 tournaments. Andy Murray boasts the 3rd best winning percentage at the Lindner Tennis Center and two W&S Open titles (2008 and 2011), while Roger Federer, already the record holder for most Rookwood Trophies, is seeking his sixth title (2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2012).
The women’s draw is equally compelling, with the Top 30 WTA women committing. Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka, both who decided to skip out on Cincinnati in 2012, have committed, as has top-ranked Serena Williams and defending champion Li Na. Jelena Jankovic (2009) joins Sharapova and Na as the only defending champions on the women’s side. Young and rising American Sloane Stephens has also committed after a promising past twelve months. Other top women coming to Cincinnati are Caroline Wozniaki, last year’s runner up Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova, and 2012 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli.
The Western & Southern Open is held annually at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio with this year’s tournament running from August 10th through the 18th. Both the men’s and women’s draw will feature 56 participants, with the remainder of the field being filled by wildcards participants and qualifiers. Wild cards are giving to players not ranked high enough for automatic entry and will be given out in the coming weeks. Qualification runs August 10th and 11th at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
