Defending champ to miss Western and Southern Open
MASON, Ohio – Defending Western and Southern Open champion Rafael Nadal announced today he will be forced to sit out this year’s even due to a wrist injury he suffered yesterday.
Nadal, 28, said in a statement that he was disappointed not to be able to defend his title.
I have undergone today in Spain, including an MRI, and checking with my doctors, I will have to stay out of competition for at least 2-3 weeks. I am sorry and wish the best to the tournament and thank all of the fans for their support,” said Nadal.
Nadal is the fifth player to withdraw from the Open. The withdraws allowed former Worlds No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt into the field.
The Western and Southern Open begins Aug. 9.
