Defending champ to miss Western and Southern Open

NadalMASON, Ohio – Defending Western and Southern Open champion Rafael Nadal announced today he will be forced to sit out this year’s even due to a wrist injury he suffered yesterday.

Nadal, 28, said in a statement that he was disappointed not to be able to defend his title.

Nadal is the fifth player to withdraw from the Open. The withdraws allowed former Worlds No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt into the field.

The Western and Southern Open begins Aug. 9.
