For the first 10 minutes of Saturday’s CCHA semifinal in Joe Louis Arena, things looked great for the Buckeyes. Ohio State’s Ryan Dzingel gave the Buckeyes a 1-0 advantage on the squad’s first shot of the game which would have seemingly gave Ohio State momentum. The Buckeyes did not capitalize.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish played a dominating final 50 minutes against Ohio State to defeat the Buckeyes 3-1 to advance to the CCHA title game to face the winner of [...]
In 1972, led by Jerry Welsh and Ray Meyers, the Ohio State Buckeyes won the first ever CCHA championship in a conference that featured just four squads. That year, Bill McKenzie had 19 wins as a goalie and had a 2.25 goals-against average.
In the 41 years since then, the league has expanded and contracted. Soon it will disband.
Ohio State has only won the CCHA title once since 1972 when in 2004; the likes of Dave Caruso and Dave Steckel beat [...]
It was a fitting end to Central Collegiate Hockey Association play in Columbus Sunday evening. With the final CCHA game to ever be played in Columbus, a spot in the CCHA semifinals was on the line in the historic OSU Ice Rink.
After two hard fought periods, Ohio State’s Anthony Greco scored for the Buckeyes 3:33 into the third to clinch the squad’s first berth since 2005 into the semifinals as No. 4- seed Ohio State downed No. 5 seed Ferris [...]
The No. 4 seed Ohio State Buckeyes kept their season alive Saturday in an elimination game by defeating the No. 5-seed Ferris State Bulldogs 3-1 as the Buckeyes were bolstered by goals from Ryan Dzingel, Max McCormick, and Nick Oddo.
Ohio State forced a deciding third game of the CCHA Playoffs quarterfinals. The winner of tomorrow evening’s contest will advance to the semifinal round of the CCHA Playoffs to face either Notre Dame or Michigan. Ferris State won game one of [...]
The Ohio State Buckeyes face a do-or-die situation tomorrow night in the OSU Ice Rink. Win and play another day. Lose, and the season is over and so are the collegiate careers of the five seniors.
The elimination game was forced by No. 5-seed Ferris State who pulled out a huge road victory downing the No. 4-seed Buckeyes 4-2 Friday evening to take a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-three quarterfinal round of the CCHA Playoffs.
“It is do or die now, [...]
Believe it or not, the Ohio State men’s hockey team is as close as it has been in eight years to winning a conference championship. A mixture of good fortune and goaltending has given the Buckeyes a great opportunity to play in Detroit in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s title next weekend.
First, No. 4 seed Ohio State has to fend off No. 5 seed Ferris State in a best of three-game series being played at the OSU Ice Rink starting [...]

OXFORD, Ohio – Mark Osiecki would love to get his program to the same level his counterparts at Ohio State in the football and men’s basketball programs do. But Osiecki has to overcome something that Urban Meyer and Thad Matta do not have to do; be the state of Ohio’s second-best squad.
The Ohio State Buckeyes went to Oxford with upset on their minds. Though the Buckeyes were able to stun the No. 3 ranked Miami RedHawks [...]
The No. 3 ranked Miami RedHawks have a celebration planned in Oxford, Ohio this weekend. The Ohio State Buckeyes would like to serve as party poopers to their hosts this weekend.
The Buckeyes travel to the Goggin Ice Center for the conclusion of the regular season as the RedHawks are closing in on their fourth Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular season crown. Miami is only a shootout or regulation victory away from clinching the title in what will be the final [...]
The weekend was full of opportunities for the Ohio State hockey squad. As the Buckeyes entered the second to last weekend of the regular season, they were playing the second-worst squad in the conference whereas the squad Ohio State was tied with for fourth place in the standings sat idle.
Opportunities wasted.
After losing Friday’s contest in front of a national TV audience, the Buckeyes came out flat in the third period in front of the largest home crowd of the season [...]
They say in rivalry games, “You can throw all the numbers out the window.” Red Berenson’s Michigan Wolverines were able to take this mantra into Columbus to earn just their second road victory on the season beating Ohio State 5-3 Friday evening.
Michigan held a 2-0 advantage through two and dominated the Buckeyes. Ohio State tried to rally in the third period, but its rally fell short.
This was a game Ohio State should have won, on paper. The Buckeyes had a [...]
The No. 9-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish dominated many facets in Saturday’s contest against Ohio State but were unable to find the game-winner as the two squads skated to a 2-2 tie.
Notre Dame won a postgame shootout 1-0 in four rounds for an extra conference point. Andres Lee had the lone goal in the shootout after Ohio State’s Riley Simpson had his shot ring off the post in the previous round.
Notre Dame forward T.J. Tynan, a Columbus Blue Jackets prospect, [...]
The road back has been a slow process for Ohio State forward Nick Oddo. The sophomore spent the first half of the season out of the lineup due to injury. In his ninth game back from the injury, Oddo made a statement.
With Ohio State trailing 1-0, he took the brunt of a major penalty which resulted in three goals for the Buckeyes’ power play which Oddo contributed on which helped Ohio State to a 6-3 victory over No. 9 Notre [...]
Arguably, Mark Osiecki’s Ohio State Buckeyes put together their best weekend of the season pulling off a weekend sweep over the Lake Superior State Lakers. The Buckeyes won Friday night’s contest 3-2 before easily dispatching the Lakers Saturday 6-1.
Friday evening, the Buckeyes staved off a furious Lake Superior State rally in the third period to persevere over the Lakers. The Buckeyes had nine different players notch a point in Friday’s contest.
Ohio State held a 2-0 lead through one period and [...]
The past weekend was a rough one for the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes hosted No. 5 Miami for a Friday-Saturday series in the Schottenstein Center. The visitors were not so kind to their host.
Miami took five out of a possible six conference points and moved to a tie for first place in the conference. Ohio State now is winless in four straight.
Ohio State and Miami skated to a 1-1 tie Friday evening. In tied games in the CCHA, a [...]
When Ohio State head coach Mark Osiecki accepted his position in April of 2010, he knew there was a program that sets the bar for his program. The Miami RedHawks have become the gold standard for college hockey programs in the region and has left the Buckeyes chasing them.
If recent history is an indicator, Osiecki’s Buckeyes have a long way to go. The Central Collegiate Hockey Association can be best described in three tiers. The top tier gives a squad [...]

Dublin native Sean Kuraly knew at a young age he wanted to follow his dad’s footsteps and become a Miami RedHawk. One thing he probably never expected to happen was to be coached by a Buckeye. Kuraly is one of four Ohioans named to the United State Under-20 National Team preliminary roster.

Friday’s contest between Robert Morris and Ohio State was a brutal one. The game featured 67 minutes of penalties as well as three players getting ejected from the contest.
Despite having two players booted in the second period and having to kill off a pair of major penalties, Robert Morris improved to 3-0 in Columbus all-time with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Ohio State. Adam Brace led the Colonials with a goal and an assist.
Ohio State had won five out of [...]
It has been a long time since hockey has been played in Columbus’ two main hockey venues; the Schottenstein Center and Nationwide Arena. But with the NHL lockout deep into its second month, Ohio State coach Mark Osiecki is not expecting his players to carry the burden of promoting hockey to central Ohio.
After playing their first six games on the road, Osiecki’s Buckeyes make their home-ice debut Friday and Saturday hosting the Alaska Nanooks.
“We don’t want our guys to feel [...]
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The start of the season has not been kind to the Ohio State Buckeyes in recent history. Ohio State had not won a CCHA opener since 2006 nor had it won its first CCHA road game of the year since 2005. With one flick of the wrist, the Buckeyes changed their fate.
Thanks to an early goal by Ryan Dzingel a shutout performance by goaltender Brady Hjelle, the Buckeyes are off to a 1-0 conference start defeating [...]
Having resiliency in college hockey is often tough especially for young teams. Just last season, a group of 12 freshmen learned how difficult it is to bounce back the next night after losing a contest.
Those very same players who were freshmen last year hope those lessons were learned and that last weekend’s series at Minnesota-Duluth showed this Buckeye squad has grown from last season.
Ohio State goes on the road for its second consecutive weekend taking a 1-1 record to No. [...]
College is the place many go to further their studies and to learn about life. This is true for athletes as well. The Ohio State men’s hockey team learned last year that taking for granted the success the squad built in the first half of the season can backfire at the end of the year.
All Ohio State head coach Mark Osiecki can do now is hope the squad which includes 10 players who were freshmen last year learned a lesson [...]
The phrase ‘leading by example’ has become an often used term for athletes in all sports. The term implies that a player is a leader by playing hard and not by being vocal.
This type of athlete is exactly the type of people who fill the locker room at Value City Arena as the Ohio State men’s hockey team prepares for its first regular season test taking on 13th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth tomorrow and Saturday.
“Some guys may not be vocal, but when they [...]
With the leaves changing and the chill of autumn hitting Columbus, the sounds of sticks and skates clanking on the ice does not permeate though downtown’s Arena District like it usually does. However those looking for those desperately needed dins can find them just a few miles up the road.
The Ohio State men’s hockey team has been preparing for its upcoming season over the last few weeks meeting for ‘captains’ practices’ in preparation for the Buckeyes’ weekend tilt at Minnesota-Duluth [...]
Imagine if teams from the SEC decided to break off and form a pair of new conferences in football. Something similar is happening in college hockey.
It might be hard to fathom, but a conference that saw nine of its 11 teams finish at or above .500 last year is disbanding at the end of this season. The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) will be no more come March.
Ohio State was one of the CCHA’s founding members in 1971 along with [...]
Today, a new rivalry is born. It won’t be played on field turf, natural grass, or a hardwood court. It may not have the glamour of ESPN giving it an hour-long special. But indeed, a rivalry is born.
The newly born Penn State men’s hockey program released its first ever schedule for the 2012-13 season. Ohio State is not officially on the schedule, but the two squads could play each other in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Invitational in CONSOL Energy Center.
The [...]
The Ohio State Buckeyes’ epic second-half collapse has caused the Buckeyes to pack their bags for the CCHA playoffs. The once top-ranked team in the PairWise rankings and leader of the CCHA at the holiday break, Ohio State travels to Notre Dame next weekend in the best-of-three series against the Fighting Irish.

The Michigan State Spartans have fully inserted themselves into the CCHA logjam by finishing a sweep on the No. 10 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes with a 3-2 victory Saturday evening.
Unfortunately for Ohio State, it is quickly losing its grip on the season and is becoming less and less a factor in the CCHA race after coming into the second-half of the season on top of the CCHA and the PairWise rankings.
Ohio State is still seeking its first win in 2012 [...]
The No. 10 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes’ 2012 meltdown has reached epic proportions. After holding a 3-1 first intermission lead over the Michigan State Spartans, Michigan State responded with five unanswered goals in the final 30 minutes of Friday’s game to defeat Ohio State 6-3.
“Not quite the start we had worked all week on so we had to regroup at the end of the first period,” Michigan State coach Tom Anastos said. “Our effort was much better and I thought [...]

Just one game after top Ohio State forward Jared Sullinger left a game due to a foot injury, Buckeyes coach Thad Matta had to be thinking ‘not again’ when he lost another star player during Tuesday’s 70-50 victory over the Lamar Cardinals.
Late in the first half, guard William Buford exited the game due to an apparent left shoulder injury. He missed the final 6:10 of the first half while he sat on the bench in pain while being looked at [...]
It has been a banner week for the Ohio State Department of Athletics. The week started with the hiring of Urban Meyer to the football program. The next day, the second-ranked men’s basketball team defeated No. 3 Duke. And this weekend, the men’s hockey team has a top five matchup of its own.
The Buckeyes are ranked second in the PairWise rankings which is what the NCAA uses at the end of the season for seeding and selection. Ohio State will [...]
